Mass Effect 3 Assault Rifles - This article is about the assault rifle weapons in Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Mass Effect 3, and Mass Effect: Andromeda. For the skill in Mass Effect: Andromeda, see Assault Rifles (skill).
Assault rifles are one of the primary weapons in the Mass Effect universe. Assault rifles are widely used by factions across the galaxy and generally offer moderate stopping power, higher accuracy than machine guns, and higher heat sources than shotguns, pistols/heavy pistols, or sniper rifles .
Mass Effect 3 Assault Rifles
Assault rifles refer to both the weapon type and the combat-oriented abilities available only to Soldiers, Turian Agent, and Krogan Battlemaster as starting abilities. Assault rifles are designed for any combat situation, allowing for close, medium and even (under the right conditions) long-range combat.

Their automatic fire makes assault rifles perfectly designed to quickly take down enemies or provide covering fire, but due to the high recoil, snipers with assault rifles are very difficult. A short, controlled shot and a crouched stance are essential to hitting anything at range. At close range, spraying bullets at a target is effective, if not as fast as a shotgun.
The Assault Rifle skill unlocks the Overkill skill. When on, it causes the assault rifle to generate less heat (so it takes longer to warm up) and increases accuracy.
Assault Rifles is a great bonus skill for biotech or tech oriented characters. They have a rate of fire of 10 shots per second.
Overkill is used by characters who can specialize in assault rifles. Soldiers, Turian Agent, and Krogan Battlemaster can learn this skill. It allows the rifle to be fired for extended periods of time, with significantly less recoil and greater accuracy.

Note: Changing weapons, changing the equipped assault rifle to a different type, or changing upgrades currently installed on the rifle will immediately cancel Overkill if it was active. This applies to all similar weapon abilities in Mass Effect, both for Shepard and her teammates.
Overkill in the Legendary Edition works mostly the same as in the original game, except it has a much shorter duration of 6 seconds and greatly increases damage during that time. Master Overkill can completely remove all heat generation; However, this will not allow you to fire a weapon that has been disabled by enemy sabotage.
Terminator Assault Rifles can be accessed via console commands or by downloading Bring Down the Sky for PC.
Only the HMWA Master Assault Rifle refinement levels VII and X can be found in the game. The rest can be obtained through console commands.
What Banning Assault Weapons Really Means
Assault rifles in Mass Effect 2 are a class of rapid-fire weapons, which also include assault rifles, sniper rifles, and light machine guns. Like all other non-heavy weapon types in Mass Effect 2, with the exception of sniper rifles, assault rifles benefit from higher damage against targets at close range, maximized at close range (melee). The Soldier is the only player class that starts with assault rifle training, but other player classes can choose to specialize in assault rifles later in the game. The following companions also use assault rifles: Garrus, Grunt, Legion, Morinth, Samara, and Zaeed.
Below is a list of the types of assault rifles in Mass Effect 2 and their basic stats:
No longer just for the soldier, assault rifles are a viable option for any class. Their consistent rate of fire and damage make them an attractive option, although most lack the high explosive damage potential available to many shotguns, sniper rifles, and even some heavy pistols. Several models of assault rifles do not fire bullets, but instead use explosive pellets.
Most assault rifles can increase their accuracy by aiming down the sights (zoom) and sticking to the cap, which also increases stability and reduces muzzle rise. Like sniper rifles, assault rifles can also be modified with advanced thermal sights that not only increase accuracy but also increase vision to see unseen enemies or through smoke and objects.

Assault rifles excel in mid-range combat, with a balance between rate of fire, accuracy and stopping power. They generally carry more ammo than other weapon classes.

Mods are weapon-only customizations in Mass Effect: Andromeda. Mods use circular sockets on a weapon and can only be modified in the Loadout terminal.
Augments are semi-permanent weapon or armor customizations crafted in Mass Effect: Andromeda. When a weapon is created during development (crafting), hex bases are available for adding weapons. These augments cannot be modified as weapons and remain part of that weapon until deconstructed.
