Glock 19 Mos Holosun 507c - Red dot sights on handguns have become common in recent years. It's true that competitive bullseye and IPSC shooters have long used variants of reflex sights. It wasn't until someone decided to put the Trijicon RMR on a Glock slide that people realized the potential for smaller, micro or collimator sights in defensive handguns.

I tested the Trijicon RMR on a Glock 17 platform in 2013 and it felt great when it worked. But I ended up reviewing three Trijicon RMR RM07 (Dimmable LED) units.

The first one lasted about a thousand laps. Then, during one of the trips to the shooting range, the front lens fell off the RMR and got lost in the snow. I replaced it with Brownells (100% lifetime satisfaction guarantee) and the second RM07 unit was dead on delivery. It didn't want to light up. Then I replaced it with a third and it lasted about a year.

Red Dot Optic / Slide Cut Combo

Over the course of this year, I've had some weird glitches from time to time, especially when the RMR brightness changed due to recoil. Sometimes it got very bright or very dim. Then, about a year and a few thousand shots later, the windage adjustment failed completely with the dot moving freely left to right under recoil and not moving while trying to adjust.

I ended up sending RMR back to Brownells with a letter explaining my issues and they refunded me.

Fast forward nearly five years later. I noticed that I still want to try the Glock red dot again. My vision has a rare situation where I find it difficult to shoot scopes because my eye can no longer change focal planes on its own. I have my corrective lens for my dominant eye set to infinity, so red dot sights, reflex sights, and other optics work great for me.

As much as I wanted to give the pistol-mounted red dot another shot, I was not in the mood to risk another $550 on the Trijicon RMR, even though they are in the new build (Type 2). But then I turned to Holosun 507C.

Holosun Brings New & Improved 507's

The Holosun 507C (HS507C) has earned a good reputation because it is a collimator sight in a shape similar to the Trijicon RMR. So similar it has the same footprint as the RMR, meaning the Holosun 507C fits any slide milled for the Trijicon RMR. Additionally, people who have tried the Holosun 507C have said that it actually resists gun recoil and appears to be solid enough to withstand the stresses of bolt recoil.

I started looking for it and the price is right in the widely accepted $300 price range, but the Holosun 507C has been so popular in recent months that it's gone everywhere. Luckily, I was notified of the 507C's availability at Kenzie's Optics and was able to get hold of one.

Out of the box, the Holosun 507C has a quality look even at a lower price point than the Trijicon RMR.

The unit is constructed from 7075 T6 aluminum and comes with a Picatinny rail mount that can be removed to reveal the RMR footprint, allowing direct mounting to any RMR compatible mount.

One notable difference between the HS507C and the Trijicon RMR is that the battery is not exposed on the bottom of the device. There is actually a threaded battery cover at the bottom to hold the battery in place. Please note that the included tool is required to remove this cover.

The HS507C uses a CR2032 battery. The 507C will operate for 10 years (at power setting 6) on a single battery. Like the Trijicon RMR, the HS507C must be removed from the lock to access the battery compartment. But the advantage of the HS507C is that there is also an integrated solar cell ("Solar Failsafe").

If there is enough sunlight, the solar cell will actually power the viewfinder instead of the battery. When the solar cell is not receiving enough light to power the optics, the 507C will draw energy from the CR2032 battery.

The HS507C also has several intelligent operating modes as part of the design. It can operate in automatic or manual mode, where "auto mode" will cause the brightness of the spot to automatically adjust to the prevailing lighting conditions and "manual mode" will keep the brightness of the spot at the level set by the operator.

There is also an automatic shut off with 'Shake Awake' feature where the dot will shut off after 10 minutes of inactivity (no movement). But the scope will turn back on if it detects movement (e.g. being shot when the gun is not holstered).

While I personally didn't care for this feature, the HS507C has three different reticles to choose from with the Multi-Grid System (M.R.S.):

The 32MOA wheel is similar to the EOTech wheel. I find the scope too cluttered for the gun app and prefer the simple point.

Note: IPX8 indicates that the device is rated to be submerged in more than 1 meter of water, but the "X" indicates that the degree of resistance to dust particles has not been tested.

Holosun 507c V2 Finally Arrived, Can't Wait To Get To The Range And Zero It In!

It should be noted that this product is made in China, as many people consider the place of production. Of course, this affects the cost and explains the lower price of all the features on paper, but it doesn't necessarily affect the quality of the product. However, this should be borne in mind when choosing optics or other critical equipment.

I decided to purchase a new slide already milled with an RMR slot and chose a Brownells Glock 19 Gen 3 internal slide with an RMR slot. Instead of repeating with the Glock 17 platform I originally ran the RMR on a few years ago, I chose to red dot the G19 platform this time around, as this particular Gen 3 G19 is usually with me at the range.

The Brownells RMR slider was on sale for just over $160, so it seemed like a decent buy. Aside from the fact that there was a slight dent in the glass near the ejection port, the slide looked good.

I ordered all the OEM parts to build the breech but ended up taking the firing pin assembly and firing pin safety off the G19 bolt I was going to install it on because those parts came from the Haley Strategic Skimmer Trigger kit.

Update: Holosun 507c And Streamlight Tlr7, On The Gen 5 19

I had a spare Ameriglo rear silencer elevation sight left over from my previous Glock 17 with the RMR design, but needed another .315″ elevation sight. I got one from Dawson Precision.

Installing the HS507C was simple. The Brownells RMR slider has posts into which the sight screw holes fit, which is great for extra mount for the red dot sight and requires the use of the included Brownells screws.

There is very little room to get a vertical angle to the bolts. Instead of using an allen key, I used a longer impact type T10 torx bit, so I could use a lbs torque limiter. I went with £15.

After running a few hundred shots through this reconfigured Glock 19 Gen 3, there were a few observations I immediately made about the HS507C.

Holosun 507c Question

First, the greenish tint present in the Trijicon RMR lens is also present in the Holosun 507C. I haven't reviewed the RMR for a while and don't have another side-by-side to compare it to, but I think the tint is a bit more saturated than the HS507C. For me, it's not a big deal.

Second, I noticed image distortion at the edges of the lens. Towards the edge of the lens, you can see that the image is slightly distorted, most likely due to the curvature of the lens. Again, I haven't used RMR in a long time, but I don't recall it existing with RMR. Like the previous remark, this is not a problem. The image looks good for most of the lens area.

The height and windage controls are really small and require a small flat driver. I don't actually carry a small flat tip screwdriver in my kit and luckily I brought my own shooting range box with me as the included tool has a specific flat tip for adjusting elevation and windage.

As for the clicks, there is a sound with every click when adjusting, but you probably need to remove your hearing protectors (or use electronics). I could hear the clicks but didn't trust it and chose to hear every click when I
